Earth Day can trigger mixed emotional responses. On April 22, did you feel hopeful and energized, ready to do whatever you can to care for our planet? Or did you feel overwhelmed with the scale of environmental concerns?
I heard messages of gratitude in my yoga class on Wednesday, and I thought about a message that I read from the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic church.
Pope Leo XIV said, in his speech to US Catholic Bishops this past January, that “we need to shift from collecting data to caring by changing our hearts, minds and habits to protect God’s creation.” This can be accomplished by adopting a lifestyle of care, gratitude, and reduced consumption.
We need to move away from abstract, doom-laden narratives and focus on caring for the home that God gave us.
