Beginning in September, I will be volunteering to guide groups on Scripture Walk mindfulness outdoor experiences. I was inspired to pursue this work after the death of my father last year. God spoke to me through sacred encounters in everyday life and through prayer. I was called to find a way to encourage others to connect with nature as stewards of God’s world.
Research has shown that Americans now spend 11 hours a day on a screen, and indoors more than 90% of the time. The natural world around us has moved to the background. As anyone who has spent prolonged periods indoors knows, a short walk outside can make a big difference in how we feel. Studies have shown that mindful time spent outdoors can have dramatic results.
Mindful outdoor time can help us to de-stress and enhance our connection with God. By bringing our attention to our breath and our thoughtful movement, we are able to settle our minds and have a greater appreciation for all that God has given us.
On a Scripture Walk we will begin with prayer and then some simple warm-ups. We will then experience some guided breathing practices to help smooth and settle our mind and nerves. We will begin to center our awareness and consider what we are feeling grateful for today. Then we will transition into mindful walking, absorbing the sights, sounds, smells, and textures around us. After that, we will take a little time to spread out to pray and meditate. Finally, we will come back together to share our experience as a group and conclude with prayer.
Scripture Walks will initially take place in natural environments around Orlando, Florida with a possibility of some walks taking place in western Massachusetts. They can be scheduled with a duration of 30, 60 or 90 minutes. Groups of two to ten with all accessibility levels are welcome.
